Manual Drive

“I’m still here” as he points to his head. I find that interesting as I can see he is still here; however, for him it’s not about what my eyes are seeing, but rather what his mind and body are feeling. His mind knows what he wants to do, but getting his body to cooperate isn’t easy. He describes it as having moved from automatic to manual transmission with some gears missing or damaged. To pick up one of his pills, his brain has to process the steps, then figure out how to tell the arm where to move, the hand and fingers where to line up, and get the eyes to determine exactly where the pill is. Once he has successfully picked up the pill, he has to strategically place it just right on his tongue, hold his head back somewhat, and then attempt to swallow on the first try. Sometimes the hand doesn’t quite reach the opening of the mouth which leads to the brain now having to figure out how to tell the eyes and body where to find the dropped pill!

Apply this situation to walking. When the everyday person goes for a walk, it is automatic, for him it is a focused event. He has to focus on each step, making sure each foot lands where it is suppose to all while making sure he is balanced…again from automatic to standard where you have a clutch, a shifter, and all the other things required to keep going.

Gone are the days of relaxed automatic driving through life. He now rides life’s rollercoaster choosing to smile and make jokes at each sharp turn, and all the high and low points in between. Of course he continues to tell each person that joins the ride with him that compared to what other people are dealing with in the world, God has blessed him more than he deserves.

  1. God knew exactly what He was doing, joining the two of you. You both are the epitome of finding the roses in the thorns and knowing that happiness is a choice, no matter what life throws at you. Obviously there are “those” days, but we all pray for your strength when they come at you. {{{hug}}}
